Why We're Making Room
If you spend enough time around family, eventually somebody starts telling a story.
Maybe it happens around the dinner table.
Maybe it's in the kitchen while somebody is fixing a plate.
Maybe it's at a family gathering when the children are running around and the older folks are sitting off to the side talking about how things used to be.
Or maybe it's on the porch.
Someone starts with, “You know, back when I was coming up…”
And before long, everybody is listening.
That's usually how something gets passed down.
A story. A lesson. A warning. A little wisdom. Sometimes even an opportunity.
At the Carlo & Nika White Foundation, we've been thinking a lot about what gets passed down.
Not just from one person to another.
But from one generation to the next.
That's really at the heart of who we are.
And it's why we're creating The Porch.
Our Story Has Always Been About What Comes Next
CNWF is a family philanthropic foundation, but the word family means something important to us.
Family teaches you to think beyond yourself.
You start thinking about your children.
And their children.
You think about what you were given, what you had to learn for yourself, what doors someone opened for you—and what you want to make possible for the people coming behind you.
That same thinking shapes our philanthropy.
For Carlo and Dr. Nika White, success was never supposed to stop with their own family.
The resources, relationships, knowledge, influence, and opportunities our family has been blessed with come with a responsibility:
Create possibilities for someone else.
That's why CNWF exists.
We believe legacy isn't simply about what you leave behind.
It's also about what you make possible for others.
Educate. Equip. Empower.
Those three words guide our work.
Educate.
Because knowledge can change what someone believes is possible.
Equip.
Because knowing an opportunity exists isn't enough if you don't have the resources, relationships, experiences or access to pursue it.
Empower.
Because ultimately, we want people to take what they've learned and what they've been given and build something of their own.
A career.
A business.
A stronger family.
A healthier life.
A community.
An opportunity for somebody else.
That's why our work focuses on education, economic empowerment and leadership development. It's why we invest in scholarships. It's why we expose young people to colleges, careers, mentors, service and experiences through Leaders in Training. It's why we believe in entrepreneurship, ownership, financial knowledge and access.
But underneath all of those things is something much simpler:
People need opportunity.
And sometimes opportunity begins with knowing something you didn't know yesterday.
Meeting someone you wouldn't normally meet.
Hearing someone else's story.
Discovering a resource.
Being exposed to a different possibility.
Or simply having a conversation that changes the way you think.
That's where The Porch comes in.
Why a Porch?
Because some of the most important things we've learned didn't come from a classroom.
They came from people.
From parents and grandparents.
Teachers and coaches.
Pastors and neighbors.
Mentors and friends.
People who sat with us long enough to share what they knew.
That's what we want this space to feel like.
Not an organization talking at you.
People talking with each other.
The Porch is the community journal of the Carlo & Nika White Foundation—a place for stories worth telling, conversations worth having and knowledge worth sharing.
Some days, we may talk about college.
Other days, money.
Leadership.
Entrepreneurship.
Parenting.
Mental wellness.
Faith.
Careers.
Relationships.
Community.
We might introduce you to an entrepreneur doing incredible work right around the corner.
You may hear directly from one of our LIT scholars about something they're discovering about themselves.
We may share a scholarship opportunity, community resource or program somebody needs to know about.
We might sit down with an elder whose life contains lessons no textbook could teach.
And sometimes we may simply talk about something our community doesn't talk about enough.
Because education doesn't always look like a lesson.
Sometimes it's a conversation.
There Is Already So Much Here
One thing you'll notice about The Porch is that we're not interested in telling stories that begin and end with what our communities don't have.
Yes, barriers exist.
Access isn't equal.
Opportunity isn't always distributed fairly.
Those realities matter.
But they are not the entirety of our story.
Look around our communities and you'll also find talent.
Creativity.
Ambition.
Faith.
Entrepreneurship.
Leadership.
Wisdom.
Joy.
People taking care of their families.
Young people imagining lives bigger than what they've seen.
People quietly making their neighborhoods better.
And people holding knowledge that somebody else needs.
CNWF doesn't create that potential.
It's already there.
Our responsibility is to help create the access, relationships, resources, experiences and opportunities that allow it to go further.
The Porch gives us another way to do that.
Pull Up a Chair
There's an old truth about a good porch:
You never quite know who might stop by.
That's part of what makes it special.
So over time, we want you to meet people here.
Scholars.
Parents.
Entrepreneurs.
Educators.
Community leaders.
Mentors.
Professionals.
Partners.
Neighbors.
Maybe even you.
We want to hear what people are learning.
What they're building.
What they're questioning.
What they're struggling with.
What they're celebrating.
And what they wish somebody had told them sooner.
Because somewhere out there, another person may need exactly what you learned along the way.
That's how knowledge gets shared.
That's how relationships are built.
That's how doors begin to open.
And eventually, something beautiful happens.
The student who received the scholarship becomes the professional.
The young person who had a mentor becomes one.
The entrepreneur who was given an opportunity creates a job.
The person who once needed someone to open a door finds themselves holding that same door open for somebody coming behind them.
Opportunity becomes impact.
And impact becomes legacy.
That's the future we're working toward at CNWF.
And that's part of the story we want to tell here.
So whether you came to learn something, share something, find an opportunity, hear somebody's story or simply see what's happening in the community—
pull up a chair.
Stay awhile.
We'll have plenty to talk about.
Welcome to The Porch.
There's room for you here.
